For many people around the world, the month of July represents the peak of summer. In fact, you might have heard of heat waves hitting many regions in the United States. As you probably know, when it’s summer, it’s imperative that you turn up those air conditioning units to keep cool and survive the scorching temperatures. However, this comes at a price, namely in the form of a more robust electric bill.
Since you can’t exactly turn of your air conditioning unit to save electricity, you’ll have to look for some other solutions. You may not know it, but home lighting is something that actually kills your electric bill in more ways than one. First, let’s start with heat.
Heat
If your home is currently outfitted with incandescent light bulbs, you’re actually causing your air conditioning units to work harder just to maintain cooler temperatures—think of it as taking one step forward and two steps back. Incandescent light bulbs by heating a tungsten filament (found inside the glass bulb) to temperatures hot enough to produce a glow, or light. As such, light is a by-product of heat, with 80 percent of the energy an incandescent bulb uses converted to heat.
The unnecessary temperature generated by incandescent lights only makes your AC work harder. Fortunately, LED light bulbs are a viable solution.
Enter the LED
Unlike incandescent light bulbs, light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs convert just 20 percent of the electricity they use to heat, resulting in significantly lower temperatures emitted when switched on. In fact, LEDs are the coolest out of all lighting solutions on the market. Moreover, their lower heat signatures mean less stress is placed on the device, helping them have a much longer lifespan.
For your air conditioner, LEDs allow them to just work on producing cool air instead of fighting the hot temperatures of lights.
